A cult told members the world would end on a specific date, then said God delayed the apocalypse.

When the world didn't end on December 21, 2012 (as doomsday cult predictions stated), the groups didn't dissolve—they rationalized. Leaders claimed God granted extension because of believers' prayers. This technique (cognitive dissonance management) is common in apocalyptic cults. Members become MORE committed after failed prophecies because they've publicly sacrificed so much they can't admit they were wrong.
