Earth's life nearly ended 251 million years ago when 96% of marine species vanished in a single event.

The Permian-Triassic extinction eliminated 99.3% of all species. Oceans became anoxic (oxygen-free). Land animals suffocated. It took 10 million years to recover. The cause: volcanic eruptions triggering catastrophic climate change. This was the closest Earth came to complete sterilization. If it had been 1% more severe, we'd have no history. Humanity's existence depends on extinction being incomplete.
