A forger created paintings so perfect that museums displayed them as genuine Vermeer for years.

Han van Meegeren created fake Vermeer paintings in the 1930s-40s. He was so skilled that museums, experts, and collectors believed him. When caught, he proved authenticity by painting a new fake in front of judges. The paintings were so brilliant they're now valued higher as 'van Meegerens' than as originals. The forgery became more precious than the truth—proving that value is about belief, not authenticity.
